BOMB EXPLOSION ROCKS BAYELSA STATE.

A bomb explosion has been reported to have rocked Road 6 of the Okaka Estate, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital at about 11.am on Tuesday. The Nation reports that the explosion which caused panic among the residents of the area occurred immediately after the early morning rain. It was reported that the explosion occurred from an old blue Nissan Sunny car parked along the road by yet to be identified persons.A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a device exploded from the boot of the car. He said the boot of the car and back screen were completely shattered. He confirmed that one person was injured among the people that were around the vehicle when the device went off, adding that others quickly scampered for safety.

He said the state police command quickly dispatched operatives of the anti-bomb squad to immediately cordon off the area.

It was further gathered that the exploded vehicle was later towed to the Ekeki Police Station in Yenagoa.

Another resident who gave his name as John revealed that the neighbourhood was initially thrown into panic before they realised that the situation was not that serious.

“We were afraid initially. But when we got to the scene, we discovered it was a minor incident. Whatever exploded was not a bomb. Only the back screen of the car was affected,” John said.
Reacting to the incident, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the development saying; “nobody was injured.”
Akhigbe, however, refuted the speculation that the device that exploded from the car was a bomb, insisting that police preliminary investigations showed that teargas canister caused the explosion.

It would be recalled that on August 28, 2014, some protesting youths from Patani Local Government Area of Delta State also threatened to destroy the vital bridge at Patani linking Delta State and Bayelsa State.
