A 35 year-old teacher, Bright Asiruwa, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling an 11-year-old primary school pupil in Benin, Edo State.According to P.M NEWS report, the convict who was a teacher to the victim before the incident, was said to have defiled the victim in 2007.The Prosecution Counsel, Nelson Okojie, told the Benin City High Court that Asiruwa defiled the pupil at Osazuwa Primary School, Ehor, the administrative headquarters of Uhunmwode local government area of the state.
It was gathered that Justice G. O. Imadegbelo, while sentencing the convict to life imprisonment, pronounced the teacher guilty of rape.Commenting on the sentence, an elated elder brother of the victim, Engineer Zini Braima, stated that all the family wanted was justice.
“As a matter of fact, I’m happy and I give glory to God that justice is done today by the Court, because from the beginning of that case, we have been praying the right justice,” he said.
It was informed that hearing on the matter had commenced at an Abudu High Court in 2008 and was subsequently moved to a Benin City High Court.Do think the sentence was too harsh?
